Four People Shot at Howe Park – Unsanctioned Gathering Turns Violent





On the evening of Saturday April 18, an unapproved gathering of a large crowd at the Howe Park area in Sacramento's Arden-Arcade neighborhood erupted in gunfire when 20 to 25 gunshots were fired as Sacramento County law enforcement were in the midst of clearing the crowd.

What Happened

Around 6:30 in the evening, the Sacramento County Sheriff received reports regarding people potentially carrying concealed firearms at Howe Community Park. A second report described a potential fight and individuals running from the park.

Aerial units was deployed and scanned the park but was unable to locate any ongoing altercation.

At the same time, hundreds of individuals had collected at the park for what authorities described as an unsanctioned event. Law enforcement personnel set up around the park, switched on their vehicle lights, and used roughly 15 minutes instructing attendees to vacate the area through their vehicle PA systems.

As law enforcement was clearing the area, 20 to 25 rounds of gunfire were discharged — causing hundreds to flee in all directions at once.

Those Injured

Four gunshot victims — one woman and three male victims, all in their 20s — were taken to Sacramento area hospitals. Two were treated for immediate injuries, one victim had moderate injuries, and one was more info treated for minor injuries. All four were reported in stable condition. Gunfire originated from the Cottage Way side side of the park near the Home Depot store at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. The nearby Home Depot was temporarily locked down. Additional spent casings were recovered from Cottage Way, with rounds lodged found in the iron fence adjacent to the Home Depot store — indicating a shooter who fired southward from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot parking lot. Crime scene investigators and detectives investigated the scene well into the evening.

Suspects

Via scanner radio read more traffic, it was reported that a related suspect vehicle — identified as a Kia — was pulled over in the Solano County area with four occupants detained. Law enforcement units were dispatched to retrieve the detainees and bring them back to Sacramento for questioning. Surveillance footage confirmed that two individuals fired weapons.
